Alvin Kommor, beloved husband of Selma, Daddy to Sandee and Shelley, Dad to Martin, Grandpa to Loren, Brian and Ben, Bobby Daddy to Robert and G.G.Pa to Sophie was 100 years and five months old when he passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Baptist Hospital.
Alvin was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on August 15, 1918 to parents Celia and Maurice Kommor.
Alvin graduated from Male High School in 1936-1/2 and was a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was the founder and owner of Colonel Quick Formal Wear and a member of congregation Adath Jeshurun. On a list of Alvin’s favorite things would be loving and being loved by Selma, his wife for over 75 years, his family who he adored and they adored him back, playing golf, UofL and UofK sports and just sports in general, playing cards with Selma and their many dear friends over the years, a winter home in Boca Raton, FL, playing golf, lunches with his fellow Romeos, lunches with his great-granddaughter Sophie, telling golf stories and did we mention playing golf.
A couple of our favorite things about Alvin aside from being a really cute guy and a great, all around person were his jokes that always made us laugh with his punchline perfect delivery and the twinkle in his eyes when he told them that always made us smile. Alvin’s memory was as sharp as a tack and he remembered everything from almost 100 years ago up until right before his passing. He amazed everyone.
We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who took care of Alvin and who cared about him at Baptist Hospital and Baptist Palliative/Hosparus Care. The doctors, nurses, aides and everyone else who helped Alvin and guided us through this very, very difficult time were wonderful and we are forever grateful to all of them. And to Dr. Michael Kommor, words cannot say enough about how very special you are, so kind, gentle, professional and comforting. Your Uncle Alvin thinks you are the best and we do too. With tears in our eyes we say “Thank You.”
Alvin is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Jenny Feldbaum and Emma Young, brother Dr. Zollman Kommor and sister-in-law Maurine Kommor, grandson Captain Benjamin Kommor and granddaughter Pia Posadas Miller.
He is survived by his wife Selma, children, Sandee Miller (Lester), Dr. Martin Kommor (Kathie), Shelley Cozzens (Rick), grandchildren, Loren Miller, Brian Miller, Dr. Robert Cozzens (Alyssa) great grandchildren, Sophie Miller and Cora Hoffman and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
