Ellen Newman Bayersdorfer died unexpectedly at Baptist Hospital on September 18, 2021. Born in New Orleans, she married Stanley W. Bayersdorfer in 1956, before moving to Louisville in 1959.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, children Carol Cohen (Ed) of St. Louis, Bill Bayersdorfer (Emily Trader) of Columbia, TN, Bob Bayersdorfer, and David Bayersdorfer both of Louisville as well as two grandchildren, Ellie Cohen (fiancé Julian Groover) of Chicago and Andy Cohen of St. Louis. She is also survived by her sister, Jane Kohlmann of New Orleans, her sister-in-law Ruth Sobel of Louisville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ellen volunteered with numerous organizations in different capacities throughout the years including Chairman of the Mothers March of the March of Dimes, Board member of NCJW, Louisville Section, and of Children’s Hospital Auxiliary, Volunteer of the Year Award recipient at Jewish Hospital, American Cancer Society—Louisville and Kentucky Volunteer of the Year. Most recently, as a cancer survivor, she loved volunteering at Gilda’s Club. She worked in sales and was the ladies accessory buyer at The Fashion Post. She was a longtime member of The Temple and NCJW.
In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana, Dare to Care or The Temple Fund for the Homeless.
Per her request her body was donated to the University of Louisville School of Medicine.
Memorial Service will be held 2:30 Monday, September 20th at The Temple, 5101 US Hwy 42. Livestream www.thetemplelouky.org. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
