Why does the Rabbi periodically stop on the way to the grave?
These symbolic stops are an expression of our unwillingness to leave the deceased. Some Rabbis will stop 3 times and others will stop 7 times. During the ninth-century, the procession stopped seven times to shake off evil spirits clinging to those leaving a funeral. With each stop, a spirit was shed.
Other scholars believe the custom of halting seven times stems from the seven references to the vanity of life mentioned in the Book of Ecclesiastes.
