Dr. Howard B. O’Koon, aka “Possum”, sadly passed away on February 28th, 2025, in Louisville, KY. He was blessed with being able to say goodbye and “I love you” to all of those he cherished. He was a generous husband, father, & grandfather. He lived a wonderful, happy, long life, along with his beloved wife, Carol; to whom he was married for 38 years.
Howard was born on May 21, 1939, and lived most of his life in Louisville, KY. He graduated from the University of Kentucky, went onto University of Louisville School of Dentistry, and then back to University of Kentucky to specialize in Periodontics. He then returned to Louisville to open his practice with his good friend, Dr. Harold Hamburg. He was a very well-respected Periodontist that was truly dedicated to his career. His passion and success afforded him the ability to donate both his money and time to the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. What he might be best known for in his career was creating a work atmosphere that was just plain fun! When you walked into that office, everyone always had a smile on their face! His co-workers and patients alike, adored him. He considered all of them friends and family. And, of course, that’s where he met Carol, whom he loved more than anything! He was the same way with everyone. And that’s how everyone thought of Howard. He was a kind and generous man.
Most would agree, when they think of Howard, they think of his love of fishing! That was above and beyond his favorite thing to do! He loved his fishing trips with his brother and best friends! A big hobby of his was sitting in the dining room making custom fishing rods. Next in line would be travel with Carol and his Golden Retrievers! And of course, his nickname, “Possum”! Those who knew and loved him always called him that!
Howard is predeceased by his wife Carol O’Koon, mother Sadie (Baron) O’Koon, father Julius O’Koon, and brother Ivan “Sonny” O’Koon (Frances).
He is survived by his children Wendy O’Koon, Dr. Kevin O’Koon (Stacey), Julie Maldonado (Oscar), Robyn Ngo (Bee), grandchildren Layla Maldonado, Jet and Pheobe Ngo, Hadley and Audrey O’Koon. While he is survived by only a few, he will be forever missed by many!
