I have known Jonathan for more than ten years. He was an incredible person in every way. He was always straight, “yashar, yashar” as they say in Israel. He was a mentsch in every sense of the word. He was a wonderful person and a delight to be with. He was, of course, absolutely brilliant. He was just an incredible human being and we are all the better for having had him in our lives. Hamakom yenachem etchem betoch shar avli zion vyerushalayim.

I am so sorry to learn of Jonathan’s passing. I joined the Department of History at UofL in 1995, and Jonathan quickly became one of my favorite colleagues. We’d often chat when he came in in the morning, and I loved his sense of humor. I hadn’t seen him since his retirement, but I will miss him. My condolences to Martha and the rest of the family.
Jonathan was a generous and delightful colleague. He was extremely supportive and welcoming when my husband Blake and I joined the History Department at UofL in 1994/1995 respectively. Our condolences to the family. May his memory be a blessing.

Though I only met Jonathan once or twice, it was clear he had a significant impact on the world around him. These contributions I see through the presence of his daughter Minna, like him a committed scholar and teacher, and through his three insightful, compassionate, and spirited granddaughters. May you all be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
